Obesity Plays a Heavy Role in Gum Disease

Gum disease is the latest health issue that may worsen with obesity

Gum disease is usually attributed to poor dental care habits, but there are a variety of risk factors that can increase your chances of developing this serious condition. These include age, smoking, genetics, medications, and stress. Now, a new study adds obesity to that long list of factors that can contribute to gum disease. A study published in the Journal of General Dentistry found that people who were overweight had a higher risk of experiencing gum disease.

“Obese individuals’ bodies relentlessly produce cytokines, proteins with inflammatory properties. These cytokines may directly injure the gum tissues or reduce blood flow to the gum tissues, thus promoting the development of gum disease,” explained Charlene B. Krejci, D.D.S., an associate clinical professor of periodontics at Case Western Reserve University and the lead author of the study.

To clarify the link, people who are overweight produce more of these inflammatory cytokines, which can affect gums and cause them to become inflamed. And one of the primary signs of gum disease is swollen, painful gums.

According to the CDC, approximately half of Americans over age 30 may have some form of gum disease. Gingivitis is the mildest stage and it accounts for nearly 70 percent of all gum disease cases. The signs of gingivitis include inflamed gums, sensitive teeth and persistent bad breath. Fortunately, you can reverse any damage by getting immediate treatment at your dental clinic and practicing proper dental care. If left untreated, gum disease can become much more serious and lead to tooth loss, gum damage, and other health conditions.

But rather than deal with problems, it’s better to focus on prevention. Make it a must to practice good dental habits at home and be sure to get regular check-ups and cleanings at your dental clinic. While daily brushing and flossing can help protect you from gum disease, only dental offices have the advanced tools and highly trained professionals to really prevent, detect, and treat gum disease to save you from pain and problems.
